Post-2020 APEC must be dynamic, seamless, resilient, inclusive and sustainable – ABAC PH

ABAC PH member Guillermo Luz presented the Council’s inputs during the Multi-Stakeholder Consultation on Post-2020 Vision for APEC last October 14 at the Makati Diamond Residences. Presenting to representatives of different government agencies, private sector, and academe, Mr. Luz echoed the entire ABAC’s position for APEC’s future:

“ABAC seeks a dynamic, seamless, resilient, and market-oriented Pacific region, in which an individual or firm can connect, do business and find success with equal ease in any part of the region. To achieve this, economies must be capable of and committed to improving equity, inclusion and non-discrimination, and supported by structurally-sound, responsive, predictable, business-friendly and innovation-friendly behind-the-border ecosystems.”

The four (4) elements of the future APEC cover the following areas:

  • Dynamic – digital economy, good regulatory practices, competition policy, intellectual property, innovation, lifelong learning
  • Seamless – rules-based trade, investment and data flows, regulatory coherence, connectivity and infrastructure, financial systems integration, Ease of Doing Business
  • Resilient – structural reform, education, capacity-building, trade adjustment assistance, job mobility, skills, food security, health
  • Inclusive and sustainable – MSMEs, women, remote & rural areas, energy security, low-carbon economy, climate change, education

In light of trade tensions between economies, rapid technological changes, and impact of climate change, Mr. Luz highlighted that ABAC’s goal should go beyond achieving the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific – it must ensure benefits and opportunities to all.

Mr. Luz also underscored how ABAC PH’s work on MSME, services, infrastructure finance, and digital innovation contribute to the region-wide APEC vision, but more importantly how it responds to the needs of the Philippine context.
